Bills paid by the Earl of Hardwicke 1788-1789, originally folded and grouped in bundles, usually inscribed on the verso panel with name and/or labour/goods supplied, and total sum, often with an abbreviation at the foot of the verso panel to denote expenditure category (house, park, garden, cottages, etc., as detailed below):
- Wimpole house bills (marked ‘H’): Bills and receipts (11) for work done about the Earl of Hardwicke’s house by John Easy and labourers, at Mr Daintry’s order, Nov 1788-July 1789. Work includes cleaning, brewing, milking, porterage, firewood, gravelling and other labouring duties. Receipt for carpenter’s work about the Earl of Hardwicke’s house to John Ratford, by Mr Daintry’s order, December 1787-October 1788. Work includes repairs, furniture and carpet moving, and cleaning gutters. Receipt for carpenter’s work about the Earl of Hardwicke’s house to John Ratford, by Mr Daintry’s order, October 1788-September 1789. Work includes repairs, furniture and carpet moving, and cleaning gutters. Receipts (2) for chimney sweeping at Wimpole Hall, by John Taylor, 1789.

- Woods bills: 3 payments for carpentry work (felling, fencing and pruning): to Richard Giffen for work at Whaddon; to Thomas Leat for work at Whaddon; and to John Ratford for work at Mr Beldam’s, James Bennett’s and John Challand’s grounds, and Samuel Blow’s driftway, at Mr Daintry’s order (marked ‘W’ for woods).
