Title inscribed on cartouche on framed drawing (upper centre): ‘HOUSHOLD FURNITURE WEAPONS and TOOLS us’d by the INHABITANTS of the SOUTH SEA ISLANDS’.
Key inscribed in ink below frame of drawing: ‘1. Basket. 2 Mallet. 3 Chissel. 4 Bow. 5 Quiver of arrows. 6 Stool. 7 Lance with which they Play call’d by them Verrowhah. 8 Weapon call’d by them Toto. 9. Weapon called by them Mahai. 10 Gorget made of Feathers used as an Ornament in War. 11 Different Sorts of Fish hooks. 12 Stone pestle with which they beat their bread fruit into a paste 24. Stone adze or hatchet. 14. Wooden mallet with wich they beat out their Cloth. 15 Instruments with which they make black marks on their bodies call’d by them Tattow. 16 Square Spar on which the Cloth is laid when beat out.’
Some of the same artefacts feature in drawings by other artists on the voyage, but these drawings do not seem to be copies.
