Title:

Charts, plans, views and drawings, taken on board H.M. bark Endeavour, in the years 1768, 1769 and 1770, by Lieut. James Cook, Commander

Scope & Content:

Volume of 42 folios containing charts, plans, coastal views and drawings from Cook's first voyage. All executed in Indian ink, and previously all attributed to Cook. Recent scholarship suggests that, while Cook was responsible for the surveys, Isaac Smith may have been the draughtsman, while a number of drawings have been attributed to Alexander Buchan.

Preliminary matter: at the front of the volume is pasted in a copy of letter from I. M. Crawford, Western Australian Museum, Perth, to Vincent Megaw, Flinders University, 7 July 1980, which describes the drawing on folio 44, detailing the vegetation and artefacts (including spear, spearthrower and boomerangs), and states that the artist was probably Jane King.
