In August 1990 Meyer decided not to stand at the next general election in Clwyd North West or to seek another seat. Includes letters regretting his decision and congratulating him on his memoir, Stand Up and Be Counted, published in Oct 1990. Also includes: a letter from Michael Heseltine (12 Nov 1990) thanking Meyer “for all [he] has said”. Two days later Heseltine confirmed he would stand against Margaret Thatcher in that year’s leadership election; a letter from Geoffrey Howe, who had resigned as Deputy Prime Minister on 1 Nov 1990, written on the day of he gave his resignation speech in the House of Commons (13 Nov 1990) thanking Meyer for his “kindness and support”; letters from supporters thanking Meyer for his previous year’s challenge to Thatcher and acknowledging that it opened the way for the likes of Heseltine; and letters wishing him well as he retired from Parliament on its dissolution in Mar 1992.
