Contains letters to Penelope Fitzgerald from family (except those listed in separate files within this sub-series) and friends. Includes letters from Maryllis Condor (‘Willie’); Hugh Lee (‘Ham’); and Janet Probert (née Russell). Generally, correspondence from friends has been included in this file where there is more than one letter from a single correspondent, or where the author addresses Fitzgerald informally, as ‘Mops’. There is also a small collection of letters which were grouped together before intake of the archive and have been left so (rather than integrated into other files within the series), from authors such as Sybille Bedford, Antonia Byatt, Francis King, Penelope Lively, Muriel Spark, and Andrew Wilson.

The letters from ex-students appear to have been grouped by Hermione Lee during research for her biography of Fitzgerald’s life and have been left so in order to preserve the contextual information.

Amongst the family correspondence there is a letter from Fitzgerald's son, Valpy, and a message from Mary Knox which accompanies a list of pictures lent to the museum at St Guy's Hospital for an exhibition on the work of E H Shepard (in 1980).
