Isabel Fenella Place 'Voyage to India in the Madagascar'
- Scope & Content:
-
Diary kept by Mrs Isabel Fenella Place, née Clay of her journey to India in 1851 aboard the Madagascar, Captain Hight commanding.
The diary includes an illustration, possibly of the Madagascar; a list of the officers and passengers aboard the ship and entries from 26th March to 9th June 1851.
Folios 41-57 are copies of scriptures, extracts from the bible, parables and prayers recorded by Isabel Place during the voyage. Folio 50 contains notes on 'the alphabet of the Jews' and includes Hebrew characters. The diary has also been turned over so the entries on folios 51-57 appear upside down and in reverse.
