- Scope & Content:
-
Diary kept by Lydia Fanny Sophia Raban (1862-1942), youngest daughter of Herbert Raban (1820-1887) and his wife Lydia King Baker (1821-1862). Lydia married 29 May 1890 to Robert Francis Salisbury Pitt.
The diary commences 3 January 1889, with Lydia commenting she had only purchased it the day before, and runs to 18 July 1889, there is then a gap of 6 blank folios before the entries commence again on 1 December 1889, ending on 5 December 1889.
The diary entries record her daily activities, primarily with her sister Ellie (Ellen Lydia Mary Curtis Raban 1857-1914) as her companion. The entries record visits paid to friends and family, letters written and received, entertainments attended, a visit to Wimbledon to stay with her aunt Jessie Evans (née Raban) and cousin Nelly (Ellen Agnes Evans) in late June and early July and a trip to Cologne, Germany in July.
The entries for 1 to 5 December 1889 detail a visit to Wingfield, Wiltshire to stay with (Emma) Marie Caillard, daughter of Camille F D Caillard, a Judge at the County Court, and his wife Amy at their home Wingfield House.
The entries often mention her future husband Robert Francis Salisbury Pitt and members of his family, who frequently attended the same parties and events as Lydia.
