A commentary by Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Sunbāṭī (أحمد ابن أحمد ابن عبد الحقّ السنباطي, d. 1582 [or 1574]) on his own Garden of Understanding (روضة الفهوم), a versified rendering of Selection of the sciences (نقاية العلوم) by Suyūṭī (سيوطي, d. 911/1505). The text was written in 982/1574 (see Author's colophon, f. 393v, lines 11-13, transcribed below).
Selection of the sciences, also known under the title Important Principles of Plentiful Sciences (الأصول المهمة في علوم جامة) is an encyclopaedic compilation of 14 theological, grammatical, rhetorical and linguistic sciences. The present text, however, contains 18 sections (recorded as 19 in a contents list on f. 3r).
The copy was completed on Monday, 18 Dhū al-Qaʿdah 1139/8 July 1727 (see Scribe's colophon, f. 393v, lines 13-16, transcribed below). A note states that this copy was collated with the author’s copy and another which had been collated by the author and bore his handwriting (f. 393v). Six diagrams are present in this copy (ff. 136r, 251a-r, and 300v-301r).
A note on f. 1r dated 1252/1836-7 records the ownership of ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq (عبد الحقّ), apparently a descendent of the author, and a further note on f. 3r by ʿAbd al-Khāliq al-Nuṣūṣī [?] ([عبد الخالق النصوصي [؟), reinforces this claim.
The opening line of each textual section was previously highlighted with a page marker consisting of a single thread sewn into the fore-edge margin next to the opening words. Fragments of thread remain at three openings (ff. 28v, 230v and 352v), while the other textual sections retain evidence of this practice in the form of two or three pinprick holes (ff. 7r, 69v, 95v, 128v, 149r, 166v, 211v, 237v, 265v, 278v, 293v, 312r, 316r, 338r, and 374r).

أن ينفع به بأصله جميعًا وأن يسكني وأحبابي الفردوس مكانًا رفيعًا

والسلام على سيدنا محمد خاتم النبيين والمرسلين وعلى آله وصحبه
