Miscellaneous sketch material relating to The Dream of Gerontius, op.38. First performed 3 October 1900.
(1). ff. 1-2. Sketch for the first 17 bars of the prelude, in short score. In this version the prelude opens a tone higher, in E minor. With an annotation in Elgar's hand: 'This is the first idea of this work'. Mounted on card. Former references MS224; 2014.12.
(2). f. 3. Two separate two-bar fragments on a single piece of notepaper with hand-drawn stave lines. Subsequently crossed through. Former references: MS119; 1999.109.
(3). ff. 4-5. Sketch of three bars leading to the vocal entry 'Oh, what a heart-subduing melody' in part two (corresponding to cue 11 in the published vocal score). Crossed through with a 'K' in red pencil. Mounted on card. Former references: MS223; 2014.11.
(4). ff. 6-7. Presentation copy of the passage 'Oh, what a heart-subduing melody', corresponding to part two, cues 11 and 16 in the published vocal score. Signed and dated at the end 'March 1900' and dedicated to 'Jaeger'. Former references MS11; 1977.652.1.
