ff. 1-6. The Music Makers, op. 69. First performed 1912. Various fragmentary sketches:
- ff. 1-2. Two short drafts in short score for extracts of The Music Makers, the first dated 'May 15 1912' is headed ‘The Complete Understanding’, the second is dated 'June 9 1912'. Both headed ‘Ode’. Former references: MS49(2); 1977.715.1. For MS49(1), see MS Mus. 1843/1/12.
- ff. 3-4. Pencil sketch in short score for a passage corresponding to cues 100-102 in the published score (f. 4). The verso contains a very short fragmentary sketch headed ‘Falstaff’, crossed through. Sent to Alice Stuart-Wortley in an envelope postmarked ‘Hampstead 10 Ju[ne] 13’ (f. 3). Former references: MS115; 1999.106.
- ff. 5-6. Two sketches, in short score. The first (f. 5) corresponds to cues 15-16 in the published score and has a stamped title at the top of the page, ‘The Music Makers’. Towards the top of the page an annotation in Elgar's hand states: '? change of key'. In ink, with a 'K' across the page in red pencil. The second sketch (f. 6) correspondence to bars 5-12 of cue 52. Partly in ink, partly in pencil. At the bottom of both leaves, a note in the hand of Sir Ivor Atkins states: ‘sent to me Dec 24 1912'. Former references: MS133; 2000.019.
