ff. 1-25. Songs for single voice with orchestral accompaniment, composed by Edward Elgar and in his hand.
(1). ff. 1-14. Three songs from a projected cycle of six to words by Gilbert Parker (op. 59). Earlier sketch material dates from the end of 1909 (see Add MS 58025, ff. 1-17 and Add MS 63157, ff. 42v-45), with orchestration undertaken in January 1910. The three songs included here were the only ones to have been completed and were first performed in their orchestral version at the Queen's Hall, 24 January 1910, with Elgar conducting.
- ff. 1-5. ‘Oh Soft was the Song’, piano vocal score with annotations in red ink. Former references: MS107; 1999.018.
- ff. 6-9. ‘Was it some golden star’, piano vocal score with annotations in red ink. Former references: MS108; 1999.019.
- ff. 10-15. ‘Twilight’, piano vocal score with annotations in red ink. Former references: MS109; 1999.020.
(2). f. 16. Carillon, op. 75, recitation for speaker and orchestra, words by Emile Cammaerts. 1914. Single sketch leaf, in pencil and headed 'Carillon sketch'. Former references: MS73; 1977.727.
(3). ff. 17-24. Callicles, song for solo bass and orchestra. Miscellaneous sketches on different sizes of paper, primarily for Callicles but interspersed with material identified as being for other works. For an unlabelled four-bar sketch identified as relating to Callicles, see MS Mus. 1843/1/45, f. 23. Former references: MS70; 1977.722.
- ff. 17 and 19-22. Sketch material relating to Callicles.
- f. 17v. Sketch headed ‘In May Week’, but without the text of that song. The page has been written over with a 'K' in Elgar's hand.
- f. 18. Sketch for Violin Sonata, marked ‘Brinkwells Sept 1918’ and ‘1st idea’.
- f. 22. Sketches marked ‘Organ Sonata’ and ‘Ap[ostles?] III’, interspersing further sketches relating to Callicles.
- ff. 23-24. Typewritten words for 'Callicles' Song', by Matthew Arnold, from Empedocles on Etna.
(4). f. 25. ‘Taratella’ [i.e. Tarantella]. Projected song for baritone and orchestra to words by Hilaire Belloc. Sketched in 1933 but not completed. Single leaf only, with four three-stave systems containing fragmentary sketches of melodic ideas and part of the vocal line. In ink and pencil. Former references: MS81; 1977.708.8.
