ff. 1-2. 'Kindly do not smoke…' (also known as the Smoking Cantata), for baritone and orchestra. Fair copy score in Elgar's hand with elaborate title page referring to the piece as: 'specimen of an edifying, allegorical, improving, expostulatory, educational, persuasive, hortatory, instructive, dictatoial, magisterial, mandatory work for solo (E. Speyer) and chorus of unintelligent smokers'. Five movements are listed, of which this seems to be the third: 'Recit. by E. Speyer in the character of Sarastrowotanbasilioklingsohrdalandmarcelorovesobiterolfscarpia'. In signing off, Elgar states: 'The whole designed by Edward Elgar, op. 1,001'.
The piece was written as a joke for Edward Speyer. The manuscript is dated 'Ridgehurst July 15 1919'. Former references: MS210; 2004.345.
