ff. 1-24. Part songs with or without accompaniment, by Edward Elgar and in his hand.
(1). ff. 1-3. ‘As torrents etc arranged as a unison song’. Draft for an arrangement of 'As torrents in summer', from King Olaf, as a unison song with piano accompaniment. Pages are numbered 1, 3 and 4 and all three are crossed out by Elgar. Former references: MS65; 1977.738.
(2). ff. 4-6. Death on the hills, choral song, words by Apollon Nikolaevich Maikov, translated by Rosa Newmarch. 1914. Three leaves of sketches in pencil. The first is a cropped sheet and dated 'Jan 20 1914' at the top. At the bottom Elgar writes: 'This sketch for windflower'. The subsequent leaves are numbered '2' and '3'. Former references: MS56; 1977.699.
(3). ff. 7-8. 'Inside the bar', part song for four baritones, later added to Fringes of the Fleet. Words by Gilbert Parker. 1917. Draft for vocal parts, in ink. Former references: MS60; 1977.672.
(4). ff. 9-16. The Wanderer, part song for TTBB, Words adapted by Elgar from Wit and Drollery (anonymous, 1661). One page of manuscript sketches in pencil, followed by a draft in ink. With the early title ‘A Strange Song’ crossed out on f.10v. Former references: MS2; 1977.645.
(5). ff. 17-23. ‘Zut! Zut! Zut!’, part song for TTBB, with subtitle ‘Marching Song’ on f. 18 and earlier title ‘Remembrance’ on f.18v, words by Richard Mardon. 1923. Draft in ink, with additional sketches in pencil and typed copy of the words (f. 17). On f. 22v there is a sketch for ‘The Wanderer’ headed ‘Libertas’. Part of the text of that part song appears on f.23. Former references: MS113; 1999.023.
(6). f. 24. ‘The Herald’, part song for TTBB, words by Alexandra Smith from A Life Drama (1853). Incomplete, the first two bars only. Former references: MS110; 1999.021.
