(1). f. 1. Symphony no. 1, in A flat major, op. 55. Single folio headed ‘first sketch for symphony’, in Elgar’s hand. Signed and dated ‘1908’ at the bottom, together with a dedication to Ivor Atkins dated 1909. Former references: MS144; 2000.021. From the collection of Wulstan Atkins.
(2). ff. 2-3. Symphony no. 1, in A flat major, op. 55. Draft in short score, headed ‘end of scherzo’. Former references: MS143; 2000.022. From the collection of Wulstan Atkins.
(3) f. 4. Symphony no. 2, in E flat major, op. 63. Lower portion of a torn sheet paper with seven bars written out in pencil. At the bottom of the page, in a different hand: ‘Sir Edward’s own writing, done to explain a point raised in conversation’. The passage is from the second movement, and corresponds to cue 70 in the published score. Former references: MS97; 1999.015.
(4). f. 5. Symphony no. 2, in E flat, op. 63. Fragment marked ‘concerto’ but used for the Rondo of the symphony no. 2. A bar annotated as ‘possible’ but crossed through appears in the first movement of the violin concerto. Cropped piece of paper with a note by Claire Stuart Wortley on the verso explaining the significance of the sketch. Former references: MS55; 1977.701.
(5). f. 6. Symphony no. 3, in C minor, op. 88. Single autograph sheet labelled ‘first thought for Sym III and last thought for V.H.’ and dated ‘31/12/1932’. Former references: MS219; 2011.349. From the Hockman papers.
