(1). f. 1. ‘Froissart’, 1890. Single sheet of sketch material. Former references: MS218; 2011.130.
(2). ff. 2-6. Serenade for strings, op. 20, 1892. First movement, copied in ink but with various amendments in pencil. Described by Elgar as ‘1st copy’. Former references: MS137; 2000.008. From the collection of Wulstan Atkins.
(3). ff. 7-10. Three characteristic pieces, op. 10, 1899. Short score for piano of number 1 (‘Mazurka’) and number 3 (‘Gavotte’). Pages numbered 1-2 and 15-20. Former references: MS90; 1977.636.
(4). f. 11. In the South (Alassio), concert overture, op. 50. Single page of orchestral score in black ink, marked ‘Grandioso’ and corresponding to the passage at figure 20 of the published score. Former references: MS142; 2000.023. From the collection of Wulstan Atkins.
(5). ff. 12-13. Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1, op. 39. The trio section of the first 'Pomp & Circumstance' march arranged by Elgar for cello and piano, as a Christmas gift. Former references: MS45; 1977.664.
(6). ff. 14-19. Concerto for piano and orchestra. Sketches labelled ‘Piano Concerto (?)’ in Elgar’s hand, together with a typed note by Clare Stuart Wortley recounting how Elgar had considered using the music contained here for the ballet The Sanguine Fan (f. 23). The annotation ‘Ballet’ appears in Elgar’s hand. A sketch labelled 'Callicles' is also included (f. 19). Former references: MS61; 1977.695.
(7). f. 20. ‘Absence’. Cropped piece of paper with a theme in short score (or possibly intended for piano) that was to be used for Sospiri, op. 70. Former references: MS57; 1977.697.
(8). ff. 21-23. Polonia, symphonic prelude, op. 76. Rough draft in ink at the on a single sheet with ‘Polonia’ added in pencil at the top of the page, along with the date ‘June 2 1915’. At the bottom of the page a new sheet is pasted on with sketches in pencil. Together with original wrapper. Former references: MS53; 1977.715.2.
(9). ff. 24-26. Concerto for violoncello and orchestra in E minor, op. 85. The ‘nobilmente’ theme arranged for piano. A single bifolio, on the front: ‘ “?” arranged for a special pianist’ and ‘ a thanks offering to a good windflower’. Dated ‘March 1918'. Formerly together with letter L10091. Former references: MS36; 1977.720.
(10). ff. 27-41. ‘March’ from Pageant of Empire.
