- Title:
- Album containing watercolours by Sir Charles D’Oyly of a trip along the Bhagirathi and Ganges Rivers, dated August to October 1820. Artist(s): D'Oyly, Sir Charles (1781-1845)
- Scope & Content:
- Album in red leather covers with gold stamped border, containing 28 water-colours by Sir Charles D’Oyly of a trip along the Bhagirathi and Ganges Rivers, dated August to October 1820. The trip must have been to take up his new appointment as Opium Agent at Patna as a letter to the Mrs. Jean Macnabb (Mss Eur F206/19) shows him established at Hajipur opposite Patna by 8th December 1820. Drawings are various sizes and laid down on album pages, with captions on facing page. Album 18 by 26.5 cm. f.1 The Catholic church at Bandel, near Hooghly, in the middle distance, buildings on the river bank and boats in the foreground. Inscribed: ‘N1’ ‘Bandel Church and Refectory. Augt 1820.’ f.2 Takht Sri Harmandir or Patna Sahib at Patna. Inscribed (erroneously): ‘N2 Gunga Govind Sing’s Temple at the confluence of the Baugrutty and Jalangi Rivers. Augt 1820’ . Note: Ganga Govind Singh, the banian of Warren Hastings, retired to Kandi with an immense fortune and erected shrines to Krishna in typical Bengali style. D'Oyly has got his drawings in a muddle since this view is of the Harmandir at Patna, the gurudwara erected by Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the birthplace of the tenth and last Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Both rivers were subject to silting up in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, making them unnavigable during the dry season, and both changed course a number of times. f.3 Agradwip, a village on the banks of the Bhagirathi. Inscribed: ‘N3 Augadeep. Augt 1820.’ f.4 Katwa, Burdwan District, from the river. Inscribed: ‘N4 Cutwa. Augt 1820.’ f.5 Houses along the river bank, one flying the union flag, state barges and budgrows in the foreground. Inscribed: ‘N5 Burhampore Augt 1820.’ Note: Berhampore, head-quarters of Murshidabad District on the left bank of the Bhagirathi, was the site of a very large cantonment. f.6 Two budgrows with other boats beyond and a distant view of hills. Inscribed: ‘N6 Distant view of Rajemahl Hills, Augt 1820.’ f.7 River boat filled with people in the foreground, cows on the river bank and wooded hills beyond, near Udhua Nullah, Santal Parganas District. Inscribed: ‘Near Oodeenulla, Augt 1820.’ f.8 Bridge with four small domes. Inscribed:’ N8 Fortified Bridge at Ooodeemulla, and hill bastion. Augt 1820.’ Note: The bridge was built by Sultan Shuja‘, brother of Aurangzeb, and was the site of the famous battle in 1763 which delivered Bengal to the EICo. f.9 ‘N9 Part of the Ruins of the Palace at Rajemahl, Augt 1820.’ Note: Palace of Sultan Shuja. f.10 ‘N10 Great Cuttra at Rajemahl. Augt 1820.’ f.11 ‘N11 Gateway at Rajemahl. Augt 1820.’ f.12 ‘N12 Part of the Ruins of the Palace at Rajemahl. Augt 1820.’ f.13 A budgerow with a palanquin stowed on the cabin roof in the foreground, fishermen with their catch and a distant view of the waterfall of Moti Jharna which falls over a hundred feet into a basin below Inscribed: ‘N13 The Mootee jurna. Augt 1820.’ f.14 Budgerows and a two masted boat in the foreground, rounded and densely wooded Rajmahal hills beyond, with a pir’s tomb on the top of a knoll at the opening to the Sakrigali Pass . Inscribed: ‘N14 Seiccligully Augt 1820.’ f.15 The ruined fort of Teliagarhi, formerly known as the key to Bengal because of its earlier strategic importance. Inscribed: ‘N15 Tirriaghurry Augt 1820.’ f.16 A steep promontory with ruins by moonlight. Inscribed:’ N16 Pointee. Augt 1820’. Note: Pirpainti, or Peer Pointy, Bhagalpur District, site of a famous Muslim tomb, was a favourite spot on the river. f.17 Caves at Patharghata, two from a group of five. Inscribed: ‘N17 Sacred Caves at Putteegotta. Augt 1820.’ f.18 The insulated rocks at Colgong. Inscirbed: N18 Colgong. ‘ f.19 ‘N19 Mosque at Bhaughulpoor. Septr 1820.’ f.20 ‘N20 Monument erected by the natives of the Bhaughulpoor District to the memory of Augustus Clevland Esqr. Sept 1820.’ Note: Augustus Cleveland (1755-84) Bengal Civil Service. Collector and Judge at Bhagalpur. He died at sea on a recuperative voyage to the Cape and his remains were returned to Calcutta for burial in Park Street Cemetary. Two memorials were erected to him in Bhagalpur, one in stone sent by the Court of Directors from England, the other, almost a shrine, built by his native staff and acquaintances. Cleveland’s achievement was to tame the Paharia, or hill people, of the Santal Parganahs. f.21 ‘N21 The Hill House at Bhaughulpore built by Mr Clevland from the House of Dr Glas. Septr 1820.’ Note: Dr. John Glas (b.1750) served as a surgeon on board a number of East Indiamen until 1778. Note: D’Oyly has had difficulty with the foreshortening of the monument and has made it look very squat. He often has problems with proportions and perspective, problems not usually shared by amateur artists with a military training. f.25 ‘N25 Ancient Pillars at Bhaughulpoor & modern Hindoo Temple erected by Juggut sect. Septr 1820.’ Note: This is the Digambara Jain Temple at Champapur outsiode Bhagalpur apparently recently renovated by the 18th century banker family of Jagat Seth. Champapur is associated intimately with the 12th Jain Tirthankara Basupujya. The two ancient pillars are Kirtistambhas. f.26 ‘N26 Shahjunghee a sacred Hill at Bhaughulpoor.’ f.27 ‘N27’ ‘View from the summit of Shah Junghee looking North East.
