Transcriptions of letters sent by Henry de Coëtlogon to his wife, Sophie, recording daily routine in Khartoum during William Hicks' final expedition. These letters include details of patrols by paddle-steamer up the White Nile.
This folder includes the following numbered letters:
- Letter 34, covering 8-15 Sep 1883, concerning meetings with the Governor and other commanders (Pachas), and de Coetlogon's orders and duties in Khartoum
- Letter 35, covering 16-22 Sep 1883, concerning correspondence with Hicks and inspections of work on the city's fortifications
- Letter 36, covering 23-29 Sep 1883, concerning the transportation of camels
- Letter 37, covering 30 Sep-4 Oct 1883, concerning preparations for a patrol up the river
- Letter 38, covering 13 Oct 1883, concerning a voyage up the river and his return to Khartoum
- Letter 39, covering 14-20 Oct 1883, concerning a voyage to Dheum, the sighting of some rebel herdsmen, and his return to Khartoum
- Letter 40, covering 21 Oct-3 Nov 1883, concerning a patrol to Dheum, then onto Kowa, and then his return to Khartoum
