- Title:
- Album of 24 small watercolour views painted on cards with embossed borders. Artist(s): D'Oyly, Sir Charles (1781-1845)
- Scope & Content:
- A letter pasted inside the front cover describes the contents of the album: ‘Chunar Novb. 3 1830. The accompanying book, My beloved Princess, which I have the honor to forward, needs no other passport for your acceptance than the assurance that the contents are from the hand of the far famed Drawer Sir Charles D’Oyly ... Your Royal Highness’s Humble and Obedient Servant C. D’Oyly’. The signature is that of Charlotte D’Oyly (1796-1834), wife of Captain Thomas D’Oyly (1794-1834), second cousin of Sir Charles D’Oyly. In 1820 Thomas D’Oyly of the Bengal Artillery, married his third cousin Charlotte Williams, daughter of Henry Williams, Bengal Civil Service, and grand-daughter of Stephen Williams, Director of the East India Company, 1791-1804. The latter’s wife, also Charlotte, was nurse and life long friend to Princess Amelia, youngest daughter of George III, who died in 1810. The album was almost certainly sent to Amelia’s favourite sister, Mary, Duchess of Gloucester (1776-1857), who took an interest in Captain D’Oyly’s two elder boys, Thomas and Edward. They were sent to England in the care of D’Oyly’s sister Elizabeth and her husband William Bayley of Stockton. In 1833 Thomas D’Oyly was granted two years furlough, part of which was spent in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) with his wife. In June 1834, during the return voyage to India, their ship, the ‘Charles Eaton’, was wrecked in the Torres Straits and almost all the crew and passengers were reputedly eaten by cannibals. Their youngest son William was one of the few to survive, along with a cabin boy, and was later sent to join his brothers in England. Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester bequeathed the album to her nephew the Duke of Cambridge in 1857 and it was included in the sale of his books in 1904. See J.P.
