- Letters, 1890's
- Scope & Content:
-
Mostly letters from ABCFM secretaries Nathanial Clark (1825-1896) and James L. Barton (1855-1936) to ACM missionaries William W. Howland (1817-1892) and T.S. Smith (1845-1900). Also includes a letter dated Dec. 1892 from Mary Leitch (1851-?) to Nathanial Clark detailing the relationship between the ACM and its missionaries, and Zenana women working separately but alongside them in the same field. Many of the letters deal with the conflict between Mary and Margaret Leitch (1857-?) and Howland, who believed disagreed with the decisions and indepence of the Zenana women in Jaffna. Also discusses Rev. E.P. Hastings' (1821-?) death and the potential sale of Manepy. Good demonstration of areas of conflict for the ACM (especially around native teachers, split missions, and the lack of missionaries).
