- Title:
- Seven cuttings with historiated initials from Italian manuscripts
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 1-4: Seven historiated initials from Italian manuscripts of the 14th century:
f. 1r (above): Initial 'I' of God creating the earth above, and God creating Adam below; on the reverse are three 4-line staves with musical notation and three lines of fragmentary text.
f. 1r (below): Initial 'I' of two saints holding palm leaves, one with a beard and one with a book in his hand; three and a half 4-line staves are visible through the lower illumination.
f. 2r (above): Initial 'S' of two saints stopping a soldier from killing a sheep and on the reverse, two 4-line staves with musical notation and two lines of fragmentary text: "est oc ci".
f. 2r (below): Initial 'V' of the Poisoning of St John the Evangelist, who drinks from a chalice of poisoned wine, and four other figures, one of which has fallen to the ground, poisoned while another kisses his cloak; on the reverse are two 4-line staves with musical notation and two lines of fragmentary text: "Et scimus".
ff. 1 and 2 are from a choir book, attributed to the artist Nerio, who worked in Bologna in the 1st quarter of the 14th century.
f. 3r (above): Initial 'G' of the Assumption of the Virgin in colours, introducing the introit for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August): "Gaudeamus omnes in Domino diem festum celebrantes subhonore beatae Mariae Virginis". On the reverse, two 4-line staves with musical notation and two lines of fragmentary text: 'crucis ce / t. off[ertorium]', from the alleluia for the Feast of St. Lawrence Martyr (10 August): "Alleluia. Levita Laurentius bonum opus operatus est: qui per signum Crucis caecos illuminavit", with the rubric for the following offertory. The miniature comes from the verso of the leaf from which it was excised.
f. 3r (below): Initial 'E' with two saints one of whom is holding a book, in colours, possibly illustrating the text for the second antiphon of the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin (2 February): "Exsurge, Domine, adjuva nos ". On the reverse, two 4-line staves with musical notation and two lines of fragmentary text: 'it virgo / dominem', possibly correspond to the sixth antiphon of the same Feast: "Adorna thalamum tuum, Sion, et suscipe Regem Christum….subsistit Virgo, adducens manibus Filium ante luciferum genitum: quem accipiens Simeon ulnas suas praedicavit populis Dominum eum esse vitae et mortis, et Salvatorem mundi".
f. 4r: Initial V' with The Ascension of Christ in colours and gold, illustrates the text of the introit for the Feast of the Ascension: "Viri Galilaei quid admiramini adspicientes in coelum?". On the reverse, three 4-line staves with musical notation and two lines of fragmentary text: 'in ore me o / rum laudabo / eram pauperis', from the preceeding offertory "Confitebor Domino nimis in ore meo et in medio multorum laudabo eum qui adstitit a dextris pauperis". The miniature appeared on the verso of the leaf from which it was excised.
ff. 3r and 4r are perhaps from the same manuscript, a Gradual from central Italy.
