Fourteen leaves (one fragmentary) from volume 2 of a Latin Bible in three volumes ('The Teutonic Knights Bible'). Other leaves are now London, Victoria and Albert Museum, nos 9036A to 9036Z, 9036Z/A, 9036F/1, D.544 to D.599. No part of volume I (Genesis to II Chronicles) is known to survive and volume III is now Oxford, Keble College, MS 69.
The contents of the leaves are as follows:
f. 9r-v: Jerome’s preface to the book of Ezra (imperfect), followed by the beginning of Ezra, Book 1 Chapter I. Begins with the rubric: ‘Explicit liber p[ar]alipomenon secund[us]. Incipit [pre]fatio S[anc]ti i[er]onimi i[n] lib[ro]s esdre. Preface begins, ‘Utrum difficilius set facere quod postiti[us] an negare’; preface ends ‘quam illorum detractione et odio deterrebor’ (f. 9v). The rubric (f. 9v): ‘Explicit prefatio. Incipit liber esdre primus’; I Ezra 1:1-9 (imperfect), ends, ‘Et hic est numerus eorum: phialae aureae triginta, phialae...’.
f. 10r-v: The end of the book of Nehemiah (13:13-26) and the beginning of Ezra, book II (II Ezra 1:1-25). Begins at Nehemiah, 13:13, ‘...credite sunt partes fratrum suorum.’. The rubric (f. 10r): ‘Expliciunt verba Neemie. Incipit liber esdre secundus’; II Ezra begins ‘Et fecit iosias pascha i[n] iherosolumus’ (f. 10v), ends, ‘Et post omne[m] actum hu[n]c...’ (Ezra 1:25).
f. 11r-v: The end of the book of Esther (16: 16-24) and the beginning of Jerome’s prologue to Job. Begins at Esther, 16: 16 (imperfect): ‘-tum. Et usq[ue] hodie custoditur’. The rubric: ‘Explicit liber hester. Incipit p[ro]log[us] b[eat]i i[er]onimi in libru[m] Job’; Jerome’s prologue to Job (imperfect), begins, ‘Cogor per singulos scripture divine’ (f. 10r), ends (imperfect), ‘Nunc aute[m] q[ui]a iuxta sententia[m] salvatoris volo operari...’(f. 11v).
f. 12r-v: The end of the book of Ecclesiastes (12:3-14) and the beginning of the Song of Songs (1:1-3:10). Begins at Ecclesiastes 12:3 (imperfect), ‘.. brescent videntes per foramina. et claudent ostia in platea’. The rubric, ‘Explicit ecclesiastes. Incipiunt cantica canticorum’ (f. 12r); Song of Songs ends at 3:10 (imperfect), ‘media caritate constravit...’(f. 12v).
f. 13r-v The end of the book of Lamentations (4: 13-22, 5:1-22) followed by the prologue and beginning of the book of Baruch (1:1-16). Begins at Lamentations 4:13 (imperfect), ‘...ejus, qui effuderunt in medio ejus sanguinem justorum’ (f. 13r). The rubric, ‘Expliciunt lamentationes. Incipit Oratio Jeremie Prophete’ (f. 13r), followed by Lamentations 5. The rubric, ‘Explicit oratio ieremie. Incipit prologus in librum baruch’ (f. 13v) followed by the prologue, and another rubric, ‘Explicit prologus. Incipit liber baruch’; Baruch ends at 1.16, ‘habitatorib[us] iherusal[em]. Regibus n[ost]r[i]s...’ (f. 13v).
ff. 14r-16v: Part of the book of Baruch, chapters 4-6 (4:24-6:69), Jerome’s prologue and the beginning of the book of Ezechiel (1:1-2:8). At the end of Baruch, chapter 5 is the rubric, ‘Explicit baruch. Incipit exemplu[m] epistole qu[am] misit ieremias ad abductos captivos in babylone[m] ut annuntiaret illis secundu[m] quod p[re]ceptum est illi a deo’ (f. 14r), followed by Baruch 6. The rubric ‘Explicit epistola ieremie. Incipit p[re]fatio ieromini in ezechielen propheta[m].’ (f. 15v) followed by the prologue (imperfect), beginning ‘Ezechiel p[ro]pheta cu[m] ioachim rege Iuda’, (f. 15v) and ending, ‘ut vocentur fagolidori’ (f. 16r). The rubric, ‘Explicit prologus. Incipit ezechiel propheta’ followed by Ezechiel up to 2:8 (imperfect) ending ‘Sicut dominus exasperatrix est. Ape....’(f. 16v).
f. 17r-v: The end of the book of Joel (3:9-21) and the beginning of Amos (1:1-2:6). Begins at Joel 3:9 (imperfect) ‘hoc in gentibus sanctificare bellu[m]..’ (f. 17r). The rubric, ‘Explicit Johel. Incipit amos propheta’, followed by Amos up to 2:6 (imperfect), ending ‘suam et robustus corde inter fortes...’ (f. 17v).
ff. 18r-v: The end of the book of Jonah (4:1-4.11) and the beginning of the book of Micah (1:1-3:1). Begins at Jonas 4:1, ‘Et afflictus est ionas afflictione magna’ (f. 18r). The rubric, ‘Explicit Ionas. Incipit micheas p[ro]ph[et]a (f. 18r), followed by Mica 1-3 (imperfect), ending, ‘Et dixi. Audite principes ia...’ (f. 18v)
ff. 19r-20v: The end of the book of Micah (6:2-7:20), the book of Nahum (1:1-3:19) and the beginning of the book of Habbakuk (1:1-1:3). Begins at Micah 6:2 (imperfect), ‘..-les voce[m] tuam. Audiant montes iudicium domini’ (f. 19r). The rubric, ‘Explicit mycheas. Incipit Naim p[ro]pheta’ (f. 19v), followed by the Book of Nahum. The rubric, ‘Explicit Naym. Incipit abach p[ro]ph[et]a’ (f. 20v), followed by Habbakuk 1 (imperfect), ending, ‘factum est iudicium et contradic-...’ (f. 20v).
f. 21r-v (cropped): Fragments of the book of Zacharias, 14 (f. 21r), part of Jerome’s commentary on Malachi, beginning ‘...–derat ut per sacrificor[um] oblationem’, ending ‘ delectu[m] manifestu[m] est. cu[m] secundum....(f. 21v), and fragments of the book of Malachi (imperfect), ending, ‘hec dicit d[omi]n[u]s exercituu[m].
f. 22r-v: The end of Maccabees, book I (15:30-16:22) and the beginning of book II. Begins at I Maccabees 15:30 (imperfect), ‘...et tributorum civitatum alia talenta’ (f. 22r). The rubric, ‘Explicit liber machabeorum primus. Incipit secundus’, followed by Book II, ending ‘Ex quo recessit Iason a sancta terra &...’ (f. 22v).
Decoration:
Illuminated initials with vines in woven or spiral patterns, and with partial borders (ff. 9r, 9v, 12r, 20v, 21v, 22v), some with animals and hybrid creatures (ff. 10v, 11r, 13r, 13v (2), 14r, 15v, 16r, 17r, 18r, 19v) at the beginning of each book, in colours and gold. In the border of f. 9v is a hooded figure with protrusions on their anus, seated on a pot, holding a round object up to the sun.
Running titles in alternating red and blue.
Initials in red or blue with pen-flourishing in the other colour. Rubrics in red.
