Scope & Content:

Caractacus, op. 35, unbound proofs of the vocal score published by Novello & Co., 1898. Annotated in a mixture of inks and pencil.

(1). ff. 1-41. Scene 1, pages numbered 1-44 but lacking pages 10, 22, 32, 33 and 39. Printed single side only. In brown wrappers. Parts of the paper are missing from pages 1 and 25. Former references: PR16; 1977.982.1.

(2). ff. 42-80. Scene 2, pages numbered 1-43 but lacking pages 3, 15, 18, 21, 28 and 36. Printed single side only. In blue wrapper previously used as an envelope. Former references: PR17; 1977.982.2.

(3). ff. 81-105. Scene 4. Pages marked B-E, H, I, K-Y, AA, BB. Printed single side only. Includes an unsent telegram form attached to page AA, on which is written: ‘pZ sent to London’. Former references: PR18; 1977.982.3.

(4). ff. 106-141. Scenes 1 and 2. Stamped ‘proof copy, private’, with the ownership mark of ‘C. Alice Elgar’. The cover incorrectly states that the contents are scenes III, IV, V and VI. Bound volume, with pages numbered 1-87. Former references: PR19; 1977.689.
