Fragment of text on planetary equations
- Scope & Content:
-
Section (فصل) of text on equations with subjections on the equation of the Sun (تعديل الشمس), equation of the Moon (تعديل القمر), equation of the lunar nodes (تعديل الجوزهر), and equation of the five planets (تعديل الكواكب الخمسة). This material is taken from the Student's Method on Planetary Equations (منهاج الطالب في تعديل الكواكب), by Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Marrākushī (أبو العباس أحمد بن محمد المراكشي, d. 1321), known as Ibn al-Bannā’ (ابن البناء), or from its commentary tradition as can be inferred from the close similarity between the material in the present fragment and the opening passages of Simplifying Problems Concerning Planetary Equations (تسهيل المطالب في تعديل الكواكب), by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ʻAyyād al-Shāfiʻī al-Maḥallī (أحمد بن محمد بن عياد الشافعي, fl. 1700), a commentary on Ibn al-Bannāʼ's Student's Method on Planetary Equations (see Jerusalem, National Library of Israel, Ms. Ar. 173, f. 1v www.nli.org.il/en/manuscripts/NNL_ALEPH002879763; and Rosenfeld and Ihsanoğlu, Mathematicians, Astronomers, and Other Scholars of Islamic Civilization and Their Works (7th-19th c.) [Istanbul: IRCICA, 2003], p. 388, no. 1252, item A1).
Begins (f. 40v, lines 2-4):

أخرج وسطها بالتأريخ العربي من الجدول الموضوع لذالك وأسقط
منه أوجها تبقى حصتها فأدخل بها في جدول تعديل النيرين
Ends (f. 41r, lines 4-6):
