Title:

Collection of Arabic texts on astronomy, astrology and related subjects

Scope & Content:

A collection of texts, fragments and notes on astronomy, astrology andrelated subjects, mostly by Maghribī authors. The manuscript was probablyassembled in Algeria or Tunisia (see note mentioning the Sūq al-Balāṭ [سوقالبلاط] in Tunis on f. 1r and astronomical texts calculated for Tunis andAlgiers on ff. 62v-79v, 63r, 356r, and 356v).

The volume is composite. Folios 1-13 (text items 1 and 2) comprise adiscrete codicological unit as indicated by a horizontal crease across themiddle of these folios, which does not appear elsewhere in the volume. Thesubsequent texts in volume (ff. 14-329) were copied by many hands of variouscalligraphic competence, use different ruling and even have different sets ofnon-continuous foliation (see ff. 255r-312r and 330r-372r). It appears theywere all copied on very similar western laid paper around the years1221-23/1806-09 (see dated colophons by the hand of ʻAlī Faqīh ibn ʻAbdal-Raḥmān Bakhtiyārī [علي فقيه ابن عبد الرحمن بختياري] on ff. 239r, 254v, and312r and dates mentioned in text copied by the same hand on ff. 121v, 122v,123v and 124r). New codicological units appear to begin at f. 31 (see insect damage to the edge margins of ff. 21-30 does not continue on f. 31) and f. 55 (see extensive tide marks on ff. 55-61 not visible on preceding folios).
