[Kitāb al-tadbīr كتاب التدبير]
Zarqālī, Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyá زرقالي، إبراهيم بن يحيى
- Scope & Content:
-
Treatise on the production and use of magic square talismans of the seven planets by the Andalusian astronomer Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyá al-Ṭulayṭilī al-Zarqālī (أبو إسحق إبرهيم بن يحيى الطليطلي الزرقالي; d. 1100), also known as Walad al-Zarqīyāl (ولد الزرقيال), Ibn al-Zarqālluh (ابن الزرقاله), Ibn al-Zarqīlah (ابن الزرقيله, see British Library, Add. MS 7473, f. 103r, line 5), al-Zarqānī (الزرقاني), and called here al-Zarmālī (الزرمالي, see f. 133r, line 3).
The treatise is given no name in the present copy. In other copies, the title The Book of Governance (كتاب التدبير) is found in the text itself, while their title pages and colophons give the title variously as The Governance and Figures of the Affair of the Planets (تدبير أمر الكواكب وأشكالها); the Treatise on the Movements of the Wandering Stars (مقالة في حركات الكواكب السيارة), Treatise of the Movement of the Seven Wandering Stars (مقالة حركة الكواكب السيارة السبعة); Treatise on the Movements and Governance of the Wandering Stars (رسالة في حركات الكواكب السيارة وتدبيرها); and the Epistle on the Sealing of the Sphere and How to Use It (رسالة ختام الفلك وكيفية العمل بها; see Bink Hallum, ‘New Light on Early Arabic Awfāq Literature’, in Islamicate Occult Sciences in Theory and Practice, edited by Liana Saif et al. [London, Boston: Brill, 2021], p. 96, n. 88).
The seven tables for determining the correct dates on which the talismans of the planets are to be produced that follow the treatise in other manuscripts of this text precede the text in this copy and are found on ff. 128r-131r.
The magic squares and Latin translations of the tables from this treatise are found in Johann Baptist Großschedel von Aicha (b. 1577), Magical Disposition of Numbers from the Unity to the Duodenary (Dispositio numerorum magica ab unitate usque ad duodenarium, British Library, Harley MS 3420, ff. 1r–67v, on ff. 30v–33v; see Carlos Gilly, ‘The Rediscovery of the Original of Großschedel’s Calendarium Naturale Magicum Perpetuum’, in Magia, Alchimia, Scienza Dal ‘400 al ‘700. L’influsso di Ermete Trismegisto, edited by Carlos Gilly and Cis van Heertum [Firenze: Centro Di, 2002], vol. 1, pp. 295–315).
