Extract from the Treatise on the Use of the Astrolabe (رسالة في العمل بالأسطرلاب) by the Andalusian polymath Abū al-Ṣalt Umayyah ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Abī al-Ṣalt al-Dānī al-Andalusī (أبو الصلت أميّة بن عبد العزيز بن أبي الصلت الداني الأندلسي, d. 1134; see note in head margin of f. 166v). Of the ninety short chapters (باب) that comprise the treatise, this fragment contains the last fourteen, misnumbered here as chapters seventy-five to eighty-eight (= chapters seventy-seven to ninety in Or. 5479, ff. 30v-36v).
A note in the edge margin of f. 170r contains a fragment 'copied from a marginalium copied from the treatise of Ibn al-Samḥ' (منقولة من طرة منقولة من رسالة إبن السمح), citing Ḥanash (حنش) on Ptolemy's method (مذهب بطلميوس) for determining the ascendant. The treatise in question is likely to be the Book of the Use of the Astrolabe (كتاب العمل بالأسطرلاب) by the Andalusian astronomer and mathematician Abū al-Qāsim Aṣbagh ibn Muḥammad al-Gharnāṭī Ibn al-Samḥ (أبو القاسم أسبغ بن محمد الغرناطي بن السمح, d. 1035). The cited authority, Ḥanash, may be Ḥanash al-Ṣanʻānī (حنش الصنعاني, fl. 670), one of the followers (تابعون, i.e., Muslims of the second generation after the Prophet Muḥammad) who established the qiblah orientations of the great mosques of Kairouan (القيروان), Zaragoza (سرقسطة) and perhaps Córdoba (قرطبة). But the name is perhaps more likely meant to be to Ḥabash (حبش), the Abbasid astronomer Abū Jaʻfar Aḥmad b. ʻAbd Allāh al-Marwazī, known as Ḥabash al-Ḥāsib (حبش الحاسب, fl. 850; see Julio Samsó, On Both Sides of the Strait of Gibraltar: Studies in the History of Medieval Astronomy in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghrib [Leiden, Boston: Brill, 2020], pp. 130, and 377-78).
