Mufīd al-muḥtāj fī sharḥ al-sirāj مفيد المحتاج في شرح السراج
Wansharīsī, Saḥnūn ibn ʻUthmān ونشريسي، سحنون بن عثمان
- Scope & Content:
-
Fragment of the Help for the Needy: Commentary on the Lamp (مفيد المحتاج في شرح السراج) by the Algerian jurisconsult (فقيه) Saḥnūn ibn ʻUthmān bin Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad bin Abī Bakr al-Wansharīsī (سحنون بن عثمان بن سليمان بن أحمد بن أبي بكر الونشريسي), who completed the work in 1016/1607. The text is a commentary on The Lamp on the Science of the Celestial Sphere (السراج في علم الفلك) didactic poem on astrology by the Mālikī scholar Abū Zayd ʻAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad al-Ṣughayyir al-Akhḍarī (أبو زيد عبد الرحمن بن محمد الصغير الأخضري, b. 919/1513, d. 953/1546 or 983/1575), who completed his composition in 939/1533.
The fragment contains the commentary on the following sections of al-Akhḍarī’s poem:
- (1) Section on the benefic and malefic planets (فصل في السعود الكواكب والنحوس الدراري, ff. 172r-174r);
- (2) Chapter on the exaltations and dejections of the planets (باب شرف الدراري وسقوطها, ff. 174r-174v);
- (3) Chapter of the planets that are enemies and friends amongst the signs of the zodiac (باب الأعداء والأصدقاء من الدراري في البروج, ff. 174v-175r);
- (4) Chapter of the fortune and misfortune of the signs of the zodiac (باب سعادة البروج وشقاوتها, ff. 175r-175v);
- (5) Chapter on the regions of the signs of the zodiac and the planets (باب في نواحي البروج والدراري, f. 175v);
- (6) Chapter on the conditions of the signs of the zodiac (باب في حالات البروج, f. 175v);
- (7) Section on the misfortunes of the Moon (فصل في نحوس القمر, ff. 175v-176r);
- (8) Section on the nocturnal and diurnal signs of the zodiac (فصل في الليالي والنهاري في البروج, f. 176r);
- (9) Section [on which] of the signs of the zodiac are tropical, stable, corporeal (فصل [فيما] من البروج المنقلب ثابت مجسد, ff. 176r).
A table at the foot of f. 176r divides the signs of the zodiac into three groups: tropical (column headed ت for تقلب), stable (column headed ث for ثوابت) and corporeal (column headed م for مجسّد).
The fragment contains citations of the following authorities:
- (1) Mālik (مالك), probably the jurist Mālik ibn Anas (مالك بن أنس, d. 795; f. 173v, line 7);
- (2) The Cordoban Mālikī jurisconsult Abū al-Walīd Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad (أبو الواليد محمد بن أحمد, d. 1126; f. 173v, line 9);
