al-Durrah al-nūrānīyah fī istikhrāj yawāqīt al-qaṣīdah al-Buṣīrīyah الدرة النورانية في استخراج يواقيت القصيدة البصيرية
Anṭākī, ʻAlī ibn Ibrāhīm أنطاكي، علي بن إبراهيم
- Scope & Content:
-
Treatise in eighteen chapters (باب) written in 760/1358-9 by Abū al-Ḥasan ʻAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Idrīs ibn Yaʻqūb al-Yaʻqūbī al-Anṭākī (أبو الحسن علي بن إبراهيم بن إدريس بن يعقوب اليعقوبي الأنطاكي, see ff. 204r, lines 2-3 and 204v, lines 11-12) on interpreting the portents of celestial and meteorological phenomena and averting the harm they cause by means of prayer and amulets (see f. 205r, lines 4-8). The treatise compiles information drawn from the writings of the ancients and both early and contemporary Islamic philosophers and sages (see f. 205v, lines 10-14) and of the author's late teacher Jamāl al-Dīn ibn Munīr (جمال الدين ابن المنير, see, e.g., ff. 204v, lines 22-23 and 211v, line 10).
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Anṭākī states that he was inspired to write his treatise after reading 'the Occult Properties of the learned and wise shaykh and jurisconsult ʻAbd al-Islām (!) al-Marrākushī on The Cloak' (خواص الشيخ الفقيه العالم العلامة عبد الإسلام [!] المراكشي على البردة), which he studied with its author in Muḥarram 760/ December 1358-January 1359 (see f. 204v, lines 13-14 and 19). The text in question is probably the Occult Properties of the Cloak: Healing Disease (خواص البردة في برء الداء), a treatise by ʻAbd al-Salām ibn Idrīs al-Marrākushī (عبد السلام بن إدريس المراكشي; see Manfred Ullmann, Die Natur- und Geheimwissenschaften im Islam [Leiden: Brill, 1972], pp. 415-16) on the beneficial properties of verses from the poem known as the Poem of the Cloak (قصيدة البردة) by the Mamluk poet Sharaf al-Dīn Abū ʻAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Saʻīd ibn Ḥammād al-Ṣanhājī al-Būṣīrī (شرف الدين أبو عبد الله محمد بن سعيد بن حماد السنهاجي البوصيري, d. between 1294 and 1297).
A brief discussion of six verses from al-Būṣīrī's Poem of the Cloak ending with the words 'these are the six verses we mentioned' (فهذه ستة أبيات الذي ذكرناها, f. 225v, lines 1-6) may bring the text to a close, although there is no colophon or closing statement to indicate this. These words are immediately followed by the rubricated heading 'Section on the natures, types and indications of the planets' (فصل في طبائع الكواكب وأجناسها ودلالتها, f. 225v, line 7), which is not mentioned in the list of contents at the beginning of the text (ff. 205v, line 19-206r, line 8) and may, in fact be the start of another text. The edge margin of f. 225v bears a 'Chapter of the indications of the signs of the zodiac for the countries' (باب دلالة البروج على البلدان), also not mentioned in the list of contents, so the relationship of these to the main text is uncertain.
