Astrological fragments
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of astrological fragments from one or more texts. This item begins (f. 322r) with the basmala indicating a text separate to those in item 31 (ff. 313r-321v) and a title announcing that the subject is astrological elections (اختيارات), all written by a hand not seen elsewhere in the volume. But the hand reverts on f. 322v to that of item 31, and although the first four sections (ff. 322r-323r) of the present item are indeed on astrological elections, subsequent sections deal with various other astrological subjects and could easily be considered a continuation of the material in item 31, until the subject of elections is resumed on f. 329r.
The text cites the astrologer Dorotheus of Sidon (Δωρόθεος Σιδώνιος, دوروثيوس, fl. AD 50-100, f. 328, line 3).
The following is a list of the more clearly indicated sections within the text:
- (1) Elections for having needs met when the Moon is in each of the signs of the zodiac (اختيارات قضاء الحوائج بكون القمر في البروج كلها, ff. 322r-322v);
- (2) Section [on the fact that] everything has a turn (فصل كل أمر له نوبة, f. 322v);
- (3) Section of matters wanting transition (فصل الأمور الذي [!] يريد الانتقال, f. 322v);
- (4) Section on election of fiery signs of the zodiac (فصل اختيار البر[و]ج النارية, ff. 322v-323r);
- (5) Section on knowing the terms (فصل في معرفة الحدود, ff. 323r-323v);
- (6) Section on descriptions of the decans (فصل صفات الوجوه, ff. 323v-325r);
- (7) Knowing the influence of the bābānīyah stars on nativities (معرفة تأثير الكواكب البابانية في المواليد, ff. 325r-325v; on the bābānīyah stars, see Montse Díaz-Fajardo, ‘Estrella-corazón, estrella-cortador: Una interpretación nueva del concepto de estrella-bābanī’, Anuario de Estudios Medievales 49/2 [2019], pp. 509-31);
- (8) Chapter on whether or not there will be a child (باب في الولد هل يكون أم لا, f. 325v);
- (9) Another chapter on the child from the ancients (باب آخر في الولد من القدماء, ff. 325v-326r);
- (10) Chapter on whether or not women's pregnancy will reach full term (باب في حمل النساء هل يتم أم لا, ff. 326r-326v);
- (11) Chapter on the woman sleeping with her husband (باب دخول المرأة على زوجها, f. 326v);
- (12) Chapter on calculating the ruling sperm during sex (باب حساب النطفة يتولي [!] عند المواقعة, ff. 326v-327r);
- (13) Chapter on the indications (?) of the ascending and descending lunar nodes according to the Indian (باب أدلاء [؟] الرأس والذنب للهندي, f. 327r);
- (14) Section on the calculating what a pregnant woman will give birth to (فصل حساب الحبلى وما تلد, f. 327r);
- (15) Chapter on calculating whether an absent person is living or dead (باب حساب الغائب حيًا هو أو ميتًا, ff. 327r-327v);
- (16) Section on whether a foetus is viable or not (فصل في الحبل أحق هو أم باطل, f. 327v-328r);
- (17) Section on how many [wives] a man will marry (فصل كم يتزوج الرجل, ff. 328r-328v);
- (18) Section on the unlucky, retrograde, falling, applied, and taut planet (فصل الكوكب المنحوس والراجع والساقط والمتصل والمفتول, ff. 328v-?).
Begins (f. 322r, lines 4-5):
كون القمر في ا مذموم ب محمود جـ محمود د محمود ه محمود
و محمود ز مذموم ح محمود ط محمود ي محمود يا محمود يب محمود
Ends (ff. 329r, line 24-329v, line 1):
