Scenes from Comus, for soprano, tenor, and orchestra. Words: John Milton. First performed 25 August 1965 at the BBC Promenade Concerts.
Two revised dyeline autograph scores, one marked 'MASTER', the other 'Not fully revised'.
(1). 'MASTER'. Dyeline full score (280 x 375 mm), copyright 1965 by Universal Edition (London) Ltd. Annotated and revised throughout. Covers detached, front cover headed ‘MASTER’: pp. 1-125. Physically ordered as five sections (originally saddle-stitched as such):
- Front-cover verso: orchestra instrumentation listed;
- pp. 1-24 (4-24 re-numbered in red pen): p. 18 is a pasted-down full page; the final 2 bars of p. 23 are struck-through;
- pp. 25-48 (as numbered in red pen);
- pp. 49-74 (as numbered in red pen): the final 4 bars p. 66 are a full score paste-down in black ink; the following two pages (originally pp. 65-6) are entirely struck through; the continuation of the score on p. 67 is a full-page paste-down; on pp. 69-70, 2 bars and 2 half-bars are struck through;
- pp. 75-102 (original numbering pertains, numbers 75-81 inked-over in red pen): p. 78 includes 1-bar paste-down for clarinets and bassoons; p. 79 includes a further paste-down for clarinets and bassoons across 4 bars; p. 82 is entirely struck through; p. 83 begins with a 2-bar full score paste-down; pp. 86-89 includes additional piano score in red pen; on p. 98, 4 bars are struck through; on p. 100 the first bar is struck through;
- pp. 103-125.
(2). 'Not fully revised'. Dyeline full score (280 x 375 mm), copyright 1965 by Universal Edition (London) Ltd. Stamped on front cover: 'Hire Library Universal Edition': UE 14172 L. Covers detached, marked 'Not fully revised' on front cover. Physically ordered as five sections (originally saddle-stitched as such): pp. 1-125.
Amendments:
- pp. 64-65 are entirely struck through in red pen;
- p. 66 replaced with a new page of score black ink (hinged at the left margin);
- pp. 69-70: 2 bars and 2 half-bars are struck through in red pen;
- p. 82 is entirely struck through in red pen;
- p. 83 begins with a 2-bar full score paste-down.
