Settings of three poems by Ted Hughes, for high voice and piano. Words from Hughes, Hawk in the Rain (1957) and Lupercal (1960): 'The Horses'; 'Pennines in April'; 'September'.
(1). Complete dyeline autograph score of three settings: front cover and pp. 2-14 (4 bifolia), with occasional pencil annotation. Each setting is separately dated (as noted below). Written at the end of the score within the copy: 'These songs were commissioned by the [Dartington] Summer School of Music for the 1967 Summer School, and are offered to William Glock on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, 3 May 1968. They may be sung separately: but if sung together should be sung in this order. HW.'
(2). 'The Horses' (Op. 10, no. 1). Autograph score in black ink, including additional score in pencil (2 bifolia). Dated at the end of the score: 'Midnight 1 Aug 67 Dartington'.
(3). 'Pennines in April' (Op. 10, no. 2). Autograph score in black ink (transparencies), front cover and pp. 1-7. Dated on front cover: 'October-November 1967'. Dated at the end of the score: 'Glasgow 7 Nov 1967'.
(4). 'Pennines in April' (Op. 10, no. 2). Two identical unmarked dyeline autograph scores (each 2 bifolia).
(5). 'Pennines in April' (Op. 10, no. 2). Dyeline autograph score used for performance – marked in red pencil and in pencil (2 bifolia).
(6). 'Pennines in April' (Op 10, no. 2). Autograph score marked 'ink copy', undated. Bar numbers in pencil and some additional piano score in pencil (3 bifolia on smaller paper – 225 x 305 mm).
(7). 'September' (Op. 10, no. 3). Autograph score marked 'ink copy', with additional piano score in pencil (1 bifolium). Dated at the end of the score: '12 July 66 (mostly written Aug. 1963)'.
