- Title:
- Hugh Wood: String Quartet No. 2 (Opus 13)
- Scope & Content:
-
Commissioned by the BBC, Wood's String Quartet No. 2 was premiered by the Dartington String Quartet at a BBC Invitation Concert in Cardiff, 6 November 1970. The material in this file comprises: a diagrammatic presentation of the structure of the work; various passages in draft; and eight pages of unmarked dyeline score.
(1). 'Form'. A single-sheet diagram showing the structure of Quartet No. 2, divided into 39 numbered units or blocs. The diagram is titled: 'Hugh Wood: IInd Quartet op. 13 form'. In three formats: the original diagram in pencil; a photocopy of the pencil diagram; and an acetate copy suitable for projection, suggesting the diagram was made as a visual aid for a presentation (perhaps of later date).
(2). Draft passages, largely scored in pencil (some in ink) on a series of 11 (mostly) dated bifolia. The drafts are scored across inner and outer pages. Many of the passages are labelled by the numbering indicated in the above diagram, a few by Roman numerals.
