MS Mus. 1893/2/26

Commissioned by the London Sinfonietta; premiered on 27 November 1971. The work was revised in 1978.

The file comprises the following material:

(1). 'Composer's MS Mvts I + II' on outer bifolium in red ink. Followed by inner title-page: 'Chamber Concerto op. 15'. There follows full score of Movements I and II in black ink, annotated throughout (including remarks relating to engraving) beginning on the verso of the inner title-page, noting the following:

• Movement I (pp. 1-29).
• On pp. 7 and 8, two pencil annotations dated 31 August 1978;
• p. 18 and the first two bars of p. 19 have a replacement page and half page (new p. 18 and p. 19A) hinged to the original pages.
• Movement II comprises pages numbered and ordered as follows, reflecting revision:
• pp. 30-33 (each struck-through in red pen);
• pp. 36-39 (including an occlusion on p. 36);
• pp. 42-45, followed by 3 bifolia inserted as follows:
• new p. 30, incorporating pasted-down opening of Cadenza I and 6 bars pasted-down for Trio I (loosely inserted here is revised Cadenza I music on a cut-down folio);
• p. 31;
• p. 32 is a full page paste-down;
• pp. 33-35;
• p. 36 is a full-page paste-down;
• pp. 37-40;
• p. [41] is a full-page paste-down.

(2). 'Compo[ser's MS] III + [IV'] in red ink (top corner of page torn away) on outer bifolium, together with, in pencil: 'Hugh Wood / Chamber Concerto / Slow movement / and / Finale'. Followed by inner title-page, in pencil: 'Slow movement of Chamber Concerto'. There follows full score of Movements III and IV in black ink, annotated in red ink and pencil, beginning on the verso of the inner title-page, noting the following:

• Movement III 'in memoriam Roberto Gerhard' (pp. 1-10), incorporating on p. 8 a two-bar pasted-down occlusion and a six-bar pasted down revision of string parts.
• Movement IV Finale (pp. 11-52), noting the following:
• pp. 31-38 are blank save for a note in pencil at the head of p. 31 ('for sections 13-18');
• pp. 32-33 is a missing folio which has been cut away;
• pp. 39-52 comprise sections 13-26 (note: these were originally numbered in black ink as sections 19-32, here re-numbered in red ink as 13-26).
• The score is dated at the end (p. 52): '1 November 1971 Liverpool'.

(3). Draft music in pencil:

• (3.1). Pencil sketches (1 small folio): recto: 'for beginning of Sinfonietta piece' (Summer 1970); verso: 'Sinfonietta piece' (11 April 1971).
• (3.2). Draft score (dated 1970-71) for Movements I and II, including revised passages (dated August 1978) for 'First Movement Brass Section', Cadenza, and Trio II (9 bifolia).
