Violin Concerto for solo violin and orchestra. Commissioned by The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society and the Gulbenkian Foundation. The first performance was given on 19 September 1972, in the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Groves. The soloist was Manoug Parikian, who played the work on a number of occasions, and to whom the Concerto is dedicated.
The file comprises a dyeline autograph full score, dyeline autograph piano score, and various drafts.
(1) Dyeline autograph full score in three movements: pp. 1-32, 33-72, 73-91. Annotated in pencil throughout. Dated at the end of the score within the copy: 'London 31 August 1970 – Herefordshire 31 August 1971 – Liverpool 31 August 1972'.
(2). Dyeline autograph piano score.
- (2.1). First movement, pp. 1-16. Dated at the end of the score within the copy: 'Liverpool 2 August 1972'. Pencil annotations on pp. 13, 14. Also, an incomplete score (pp. 1-12 only) annotated in pencil throughout.
- (2.2). Second movement, pp. 1-19. Dated at the end of the score within the copy: 'Liverpool 20 July 1972'. Pencil annotations throughout and asterisks in red pencil. Also, an incomplete score (pp. 1-8 only) annotated in pencil throughout.
- (2.3). Third movement, pp. 1-9. Dated at the end of the score within the copy: 'Liverpool 27 August 1972'. Pencil annotations on pp. 7, 8, 9.
(3). Draft music, comprising:
- Brief pencil sketches dated 31 Aug 1970, 1 Sep 1971 and 2 Sep 1971 (1 large bifolium folded).
- '1st movement 1st draft' in pencil (12 small bifolia), all pages dated (most 1972).
- '2nd movement 1st section' in pencil (9 small bifolia), all pages dated (spanning Mar-Jul 1972). Note: drafts extend beyond the 1st section, extending to bar 232.
- 'Scherzo middle section violin part' in black ink (2 small bifolia). Scherzo from bar 134.
- 'First draft of Third Movement beginning' in pencil (1 small bifolium), dated 31 Jul and 1 Aug 1972. A draft of the opening Cadenza.
- 'Final Allegro' in black ink (2 small bifolia).
