Seven settings, for high voice and chamber orchestra, of poems by Pablo Neruda translated by Christopher Logue, from Logue, Songs (1959).
(1). Complete autograph full score (transparencies), pp. [1]-68. Dated at the end of the score: 'Liverpool 29 January 1974':
- I. 'Two humans stand on a promontory' (pp. [1]-17);
- II. 'Snared by the dying light' (pp. 18-24);
- III. 'Steep gloom among pine trees' (pp. 25-30);
- IV. 'In the hot depth of this summer' (pp. 31-41);
- V. 'I remember you from last fall' (pp. 42-47);
- VI. 'Call the sky mine' (pp. 48-63);
- VII. 'Tonight I write sadly' (pp. 64-68).
(2). Incomplete pencil draft full score (large format: 335 x 455 mm), pp. 1-48, scored on recto and verso. The final song is incomplete, lacking the final folio. Individual pages are dated, from 1 Dec 1973 to 5 Jan 1974.
(3) 'Second draft'. Songs I-V (pp. 1-21). On p. 22, at the top of the page: 'for No. 8', the remaining page blank, followed by a blank unnumbered page. Then (pp. 30-34) Song VI, numbered '(XVI)' following Logue's numbering of Neruda's 'Twenty Love Poems'. Song VII follows (numbered XX, following Logue) on 3 unnumbered pages. Date span: 31 Jul-5 Dec 1973.
(4). Draft music in pencil, for Songs I, II and V. Date span: 24 Jul-9 Oct 1973.
