Commissioned by the BBC for the 88th Season of Henry Wood Promenade Concerts and first performed on Friday 23 July 1983 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.
Various drafts scored in pencil, arranged by Movement, together a section of miscellaneous drafts.
(1). I. Tempesta
- Sketch material: 4 bifolia (410 x 290 mm), April-July 1979.
- 'Bars 1-100': 5 bifolia (340 x 430 mm), 17 July-4 August 1979.
- 'Bars 1-170': 3 bifolia (340 x 430 mm), 1-12 April 1980. Note: draft ends at bar 142.
(2). II. Elegia
- 'Bars 1-160 approx': 5 bifolia (340 x 430 mm), 13 August 1979-22 June 1980. Note: extends to bar 215.
- Various draft passages beginning (10 August 1979) with bar 1 (celli): 1 bifolium (340 x 430 mm).
(3). III. Scherzo
- Bars 1-231: 6 bifolia (340 x 430 mm), 10 July-21 August 1980. Note: the bifolia are numbered 1 and 3-7.
- 1 bifolium (340 x 430 mm) combining sketch material for the Scherzo on the inner pages (dated 22 June and 3 July 1980), and sketch material for the Elegia on the outer pages (dated 20 June 1980).
(4). IV. Finale
- Mixed sketch material. Outer page headed: 'FINALE'. Inner pages: 'Plan of slow movement'. 1 bifolium (340 x 430 mm). Variously dated April, June, September 1980.
- 'Variations 7, 8, 9, 10, 11': 1 bifolium (340 x 430 mm), dated 27 August 1980.
- 'Variations 6,7, 8, 9': 1 bifolium (340 x 430 mm), dated 29 August 1980.
(5). IV. Finale
- Sketch material. Numbered variations, variously dated 1980-81: 10 bifolia (255 x 360 mm).
(6). Miscellaneous material
- 1 bifolium (270 x 360 mm): unidentified pencil score (brass) dated 15-20 September 1978 on inner pages, with sketch material on back page (6 August 1979).
- 4 bifolia (340 x 430 mm). Mixed sketch material, some of which is headed 'Orchestral Piece', but also includes a draft of the song 'Mid-Winter Waking' (Robert Graves) from Opus 23, and a fragment from a setting of Yevtoshenko (Opus 25). Also includes one page of 12-tone sets (columns headed: Inversion, Original, Retro). The material is dated June-July 1974 and 29 July 1979.
- A single folio (310 x 450 mm) completed in black ink, of later date than the draft material, quoting brief passages from each Movement and incorporating comments on the form of the work, e.g. 'HW cello conc.' (Tempesta) and 'Wagnerian bit' (Elegia).
