The file comprises not only Opus 28 but also Wood's earlier settings (1956-59) of the same Laurie Lee poems for voice and piano upon which Opus 28 is based.
(1). Wood's original file front identifying the material.
(2). Bound scores (copy autograph in Chester Music covers) of Laurie Lee Songs (1959) and Laurie Lee Songs (1987):
- 'Special Order Edition'. Hugh Wood, 'Laurie Lee Songs (1959)' for voice and piano. Title-page stamped in red: 'Perusal Score / Please Return'. Copyright 1987, pp. 1-17. The songs are: (1) 'Boy in Ice'. (2) 'The Edge of the Day'. (3) 'The Easter Green'. (4) 'Town Owl'. (5) 'April Rise'. Dis-bound (originally saddle-stitched): 210 x 295 mm. On the front cover, Wood has written 'NO' and 'UNrevised'.
- 'Laurie Lee Songs / soprano and chamber orchestra / op. 28'. Title-page dated: 'April 1986 – April 1987'. Perfect-bound: title-page and pp. 2-45 (280 x 370 mm). Songs sequenced as above. Pencil revisions on pp. 21, 32-4, 36, 38 (red ink), 43. (For pp. 32-3, see item 4 below.)
(3). Opus 28, for soprano and chamber orchestra. Fair copy full score in pencil autograph (260 x 360 mm). Dated on outer title-page: 'April 1986-April 1987'. Paginated pp. 2-[43] with some additional pages in the first song as noted below:
- 'Boy in Ice': pp. 2-3, followed by 4 pages without number, then p. 6. There is a 5-bar paste-down at the foot of p. 3 (violins). Dated 'April 1986'.
- 'The Edge of Day': pp. 7-18. Dated 'March 1987'.
- 'The Easter Green': pp. 19-26. Undated.
- 'Town Owl': pp. 27-32. Undated.
- 'April Rise': pp. 33-[43]. Dated: 'Sunday 5 April 1987'.
(4). Additional Opus 28 material:
- 'April Rise'. Fair copy full score in pencil autograph (2 bifolia, 260 x 355 mm). Dated at the end of the score: '12 April 1986'.
- From 'Town Owl'. Two pages of full score in pencil autograph numbered pp. 32-3, corresponding to and revising pp. 32-3 of the bound score in item 1 above (1 folio, 300 x 420 mm).
(5). 'Laurie Lee Songs / Mezzo and Piano'. Dated on title-page: '1956-1958 / completed April 1959 / minor revisions April-June 2011'. Fair copy in pencil autograph: title-page and pp. 1-25 (including an additional p. 18 in draft). Scored on a mixture of paper (mostly 295 x 420 mm).
(6). 'Laurie Lee Songs / Mezzo and Piano'. Dyeline copy of an autograph score (280 x 380 mm). Outer title-page and pp. [1]-17, annotated in pencil throughout. Dated on title-page: '1956-1958 / Completed April 1959'.
(7). Undated draft material [1956-58]. Scored in pencil, except for one page in black ink (5 bifolia: 265 x 360 mm). Draft music for all songs except 'April Rise'.
