- Title:
- Hugh Wood: Robert Graves Songs, Set IV (Opus 36)
- Scope & Content:
-
Opus 36 comprises settings of four poems by Robert Graves, for high voice and piano: 'The Door'; 'The Three-Faced'; 'A Lost Jewel'; and 'On Giving'. 'The Three-Faced' is not among Wood's papers; the other three settings are represented as follows:
(1). 'The Door':
- Autograph score in black ink, dated: '1966 / 4 April 1973 / copied 9 April 1973'. Scored on the inner pages of a bifolium (250 x 305 mm).
- Two identical dyeline copies of an autograph score (same setting, different original to the above score), dated within the copy: '1966: Christmas 1972 / 4 April 1973 / 10 March 1974' (2 ff., each 380 x 280 mm).
(2). 'On Giving':
- Pencil sketch, dated 'June 84'. Sketched across two pages from an exercise book (with unrelated material in pencil on the verso).
(3). 'A Lost Jewel'. Two incomplete scores in pencil, both pp. 2-3 only:
- pp. 2-3, beginning 'Wake, blink, laugh out in reassurance'. Dated '28 July 84' at the top of p. 2, and dated '25-30 July 1984' at the end of the score (p. 3). 2ff. (250 x 360 mm);
- pp. 2-3, beginning 'It was not mine to lose or give away' (i.e. two lines later in the text). Dated '28 July 84' at the top of p. 2. Not dated at the end of the score, but some words have been jotted in pencil at the bottom of p. 3: 'If you were the only girl in the world'; 'Moulin de la Galette'; 'Pal Joey'; and 'take him, but don't let him ever take your'. 2ff (250 x 360 mm).
- Note: for a later setting (2006) of 'A Lost Jewel', see Opus 49.
