Commissioned by the BBC. First performed on 20 May 1997 at Suntory Hall, Tokyo, by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Davis.
The file comprises: autograph full score (7 April 1997), together with revised opening and ending (14 August 1997), and some introductory words and notes regarding revision.
(1). Introductory words and notes:
- Word-processed note recording details of commission, first performance, and orchestra composition (1 sheet).
- Typed draft programme note, beneath which are Wood's autograph remarks (green ink) addressed to 'Alan' relating to details of the score (1 sheet).
- Autograph notes to 'Andrew' [Davis] listing 'last(?) amendments' (1 sheet).
- 'An Explanation of Why I Had to Re-Write My Piece and a Rueful Apology for Doing So'. Dated 14 August 1997. Photocopy typescript (2 sheets).
(2). Autograph full score in pencil. Date span on title-page: 1 October 1996-7 April 1997. Dated 7 April 1997 on final page. Title-page and pp. 1-67: 19 interleaved bifolia (295 x 420 mm). The final two pages (pp. 66-7) are full-page paste-downs. The manuscript was originally housed in a clear plastic bag with a label addressed to 'James Rushton': label retained.
(3). Revised opening and ending in autograph full score in pencil (2 bifolia), and 6 photocopy pages of autograph score (all 295 x 420 mm):
- 1st bifolium: 'new page one' (outer page) and revised ending scored on inner pages (dated 14 August 1997) incorporating pasted-down score on the two upmost staves; back page blank;
- 2nd bifolium: new pages 2-5;
- photocopy pages 6,7, 8, 27, 35, and unnumbered page.
