- Title:
- Kitāb al-tadhkirah fī al-ḥisāb كتاب التذكرة في الحساب
- Scope & Content:
-
Treatise on arithmetic in three sections (أقسام), each subdivided into chapters (أبواب) and parts (فصول). In the preface to the work, the author states that he called his work a Memorandum (تذكرة), and that it is a condensed translation of a Persian text called The Introduction (التبصرة), in which he has also included material from another work called The Completion (التكملة), presumably a supplement to The Introduction (see f. 2v, lines 4-6, transcribed below, and line 7).
Although the author of the text is not mentioned by name, the fact that the text begins (Section one, Chapter one) with an introduction to the Hindī numerals and an explanation of their use with the system of base-ten place value, suggests that the text may be the Memorandum on Calculation and Numeration by Means of the Numerals of Sind and Hind (تذكرة في الحساب والعدّ بأرقام السند والهند) by Abū al-Rayḥān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Bīrūnī (أبو الريحان محمد بن أحمد البيروني, d. 1048). Al-Bīrūnī mentions his Memorandum in a list of his own works, commenting that it filled thirty folios, but no manuscript of that text is known with which to compare the present text (see Bīrūnī, Epître de Bērūnī contenant le répertoire des ouvrages de Muḥammad b. Zakarīyā ar-Rāzī, ed. by Paul Kraus [Paris: G.P. Maisonneuve, 1936], p. 34, item 34; Boilot, 'L'oeuvre d'al-Beruni: Essai bibliographique', Mélange de l'Institut dominicain d'étude orientales 2 [1955], p. 187, item 34; and Rosenfeld and Ihsanoğlu, Mathematicians, Astronomers, and Other Scholars of Islamic Civilization and Their Works (7th-19th c.) [Istanbul: IRCICA, 2003], item M10, no. 348, p. 147).
The copy was completed in Dhū al-Qaʻdah 748/February-March 1348 by Abū al-Muẓaffar Muḥammad ibn Muḥammadshāh al-Tafrishī (أبو المظفر محمد بن محمدشاه التفرشي), who copied the text for his own use (see colophon, f. 21r, lines 14-20, transcribed below, and colophons on ff. 43v, 87r, 96r and 136r).
Contents:
- Section one: Integers (القسم الأول في الصحاح, in nine chapters, ff. 2v-11r);
- Section two: Fractions by themselves and with integers (القسم الثاني في الكسور مطلقًا ومع الصحاح, in nine chapters, ff. 11r-18r);
- Section three: Conclusion (القسم الثالث في الخاتمة, in four unnumbered chapters, ff. 18r-21r).
The text is followed by a list of the letters of the Arabic alphabet with brief playful, often ribald characterisations of each in Persian, calligraphically copied or composed by a scribe who identifies himself as Masīḥ (مسيح, ff. 21v-22r).
Begins (f. 2v, lines 2-6):
Ends (f. 21r, lines 10-13):
Colophon (f. 21r, lines 14-21):
