Sibṭ al-Māridīnī, Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad
- Scope & Content:
-
Introduction to astronomy for beginners in the science of time keeping (علم الميقات). The title page (f. 137r) attributes the text to the astronomer and timekeeper (مُوَقِّت) at the al-Azhar mosque in Cairo, Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad (بدر الدين محمد بن محمد, d. after 1497), known as Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (سبط المارديني). Although no text by this title is listed amongst his works, the same text is found ascribed to this author in Riyadh, King Saud University Library, MS 170 (ʻilm al-mīqāt 529).
At the end of the text, the author mentions another of his treatises called The Problem (رسالتي المسماة بالمطلب) in which he differentiates between the 'true horizon' (الأفق الحقيقي) and the 'apparent horizon' (الأفق المرئي, see f. 142v, line 12, transcribed below). This second treatise may be Sibṭ al-Māridīnī's The Problem: On [Using] the Sine Quadrant (المطلب في [العمل بـ]الربع المجيب, see Rosenfeld and Ihsanoğlu, Mathematicians, Astronomers, and Other Scholars of Islamic Civilization and Their Works (7th-19th c.) [Istanbul: IRCICA, 2003], no. 873, item A9, p. 296).
Begins (f. 137v, lines 1-4):
Ends (f. 142v, lines 8-13):
Colophon (f. 142v, lines 14-15):
