[Treatise on geomantic divination (علم الرمل)]
Ṭūsī, Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad طوسي، نصير الدين محمد بن محمد
- Scope & Content:
-
Treatise on the 'science of sand' (علم الرمل), or geomantic divination, by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (نصير الدين محمد بن محمد الطوسي, d. 1274).
The text is perhaps the Sufficient Treatise on the Science of Sand (الرسالة الوافي في علم الرمل) also known as the Sultanic Treatise on the [Science of] Sand (الرسالة السلطانية في الرمل), although it is lacking the dedication to Hülegü Khān (هولاگو خان, d. 1265, see Brockelmann, History of the Arabic Written Tradition, trans. by Joep Lameer [Leiden; Boston: Brill, 2016], vol. 1, p. 593, item 56 and Supplement vol. 1, p. 971, item 56; and Melvin-Koushki, 'Persianate Geomancy from Ṭūsī to the Millennium: A Preliminary Survey', in Occult Sciences in Premodern Islamic Culture, ed. by El-Bizri and Orthmann [Beirut: Orient-Institut Beirut, 2018], pp. 162-63). The present text may, however, be an Arabic version of a longer Persian work on this subject attributed to Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī called the Epitome on the Science of Sand (مختصر في علم الرمل, see Storey [ed.], ‘9.6 Occult Arts: Raml’, §845, item 1, Storey Online, Brill Reference Online https://referenceworks.brillonline.com/entries/storey-online/96-occult-arts-raml-COM_20906000?s.num=0&s.f.s2_parent=s.f.book.storey-online&s.q=al-v%C4%81f%C4%AB+f%C4%AB+%CA%BBilm+al-raml [accessed 1 June 2023]).
The text is divided into the following unnumbered sections (فصول) and a chapter (باب):
- Section on knowing the shiner (فصل في معرفة الشارق, ff. 164r-164v);
- Section on knowing the four elements (فصل في معرفة العناصر الأربعة, f. 164v);
- Section on knowing the view (فصل في معرفة النظر, ff. 164v-165r);
- Section on knowing the absent (فصل في معرفة الغائب, f. 165r);
- Another section on lines (فصل آخر في الخطوط, f. 165r);
- Section on knowing the outcomes of affairs (فصل في معرفة عواقب الأمور, ff. 165r-165v);
- Section on knowing the figures of the sand, their judgements, and the internal and external of them (فصل في معرفة أشكال الرمل وأحكامها والداخل منها والخارج, f. 165v);
- Chapter on knowing the figures of the sand on the judgement of jawdalah (باب معرفة أشكال الرمل على حكم الجودلة, ff. 165v-166r);
- Section on discourse concerning the odd figures (فصل في الكلام على أفراد الأشكال, ff. 166r-169v).
