For string quartet and string orchestra. Commissioned by the Cheltenham International Festival of Music. First performed on 15 July 1999 by the Chilingirian String Quartet and the London Mozart Players, conducted by Matthias Bamert.
Draft music and autograph full score.
(1). Draft music:
- Draft passages in pencil on inner and outer pages of a cut-down bifolium (270 x 270 mm), incorporating a pasted-down portion dated 17 February 1998. The inner pages are a draft of the opening of the Serenade ('delicate, airy').
- Draft music in pencil on a series of folios (475 x 300 mm) numbered 2-15, each folio dated from 24 February-30 April 1998.
- Draft passage in pencil on a single folio (415 x 295 mm) dated 11 June 1998 and also 'Yes! 22 August 1998'.
(2). 1st Movement: Serenade. Autograph full score in pencil, pp 1-20 (415 x 295 mm). Each page separately dated, spanning 8-19 May 1998. Dedication (p. 1): 'for Susan, Chris and Becky' and 'i.m. Jenny [died] 10 Sept 1988'.
(3). 2nd Movement: Elegy. Autograph full score in pencil, pp. 1-27 (415 x 295 mm). First page dated 13 June 1998. Final page dated 12 April 1999. The following pages have pasted-down material: pp. 1, 8, 20, 21, 22, 23.
