Commissioned by Yorkshire ArtSpace and Music in the Round. First performed by the Lindsay Quartet (to whom the work is dedicated) in October 2001.

The file comprises draft and fair copy score, together with a set of corrected printed proofs.

(1). Movement I (pencil draft, incomplete). Four bifolia (295 x 420 mm) scored across inner pages, numbered 1-4, each dated:

• bifolium 1 (24 May 2000), bars 1-38;
• bifolium 2 (31 May-8 June 2000), bars 39-69;
• bifolium 3 (8 June 2000), bars 70-109;
• bifolium 4 (13 September 2000 – annotated 'Schoenberg's 126th birthday'), bars 110-145.

(2). Movement I (two pencil draft fragments, both 420 x 295 mm):

• folio dated 30 August 2000, bars 110-138 (equivalent to bars 104-132 of final score);
• folio dated 1 September 2000, concluding bars 133-152.

(3). Movement I (pencil, complete, 173 bars, including pasted-down elements). Four nested and paginated bifolia (295 x 420 mm). Outer bifolium with title to front page, remaining pages blank. Inner pp. [1]-11, incorporating pasted-down music as follows:

(6). Movement III (two pencil draft fragments, both 420 x 295 mm):

• folio dated 24 January 2001: opening bars;
• folio dated 12-14 February 2001: closing bars.

(7). Movement III (pencil, fair copy, complete). Two nested bifolia (295 x 420 mm), pp. 1-8. Dated 6 March 2001 at the end of the score.

(8). Movement IV (pencil draft). Three folios (420 x 295 mm) incorporating pasted-down material. Dated 19-25 July 2001.

(9). Movement IV (pencil, fair copy, complete). Two nested bifolia (295 x 420 mm), unpaginated (bars 1-93). Dated 18 August 2001.

(10). Movement V (pencil draft, incomplete). Four originally numbered folios (420 x 295 mm) as follows:

• folio numbered 1, bars 1-20, dated 16 June 2001; bars 1-4 are a pasted-down revision (21 June 2001);
• folio numbered 2, bars 21-36, dated 16 June 2001, all pasted down; on the verso is an earlier draft of bars 1-20 dated 9 and 14 June 2001;
• folio numbered 3, bars 37-52; this is a photocopied folio, the date at the top of the folio not captured in the copy;
• folio numbered 5, bars 74-97, undated.

(11). Movement V (pencil, fair copy, complete). Four nested bifolia (295 x 420 mm), title-page and pp. 1-10. The upper stave only (Violin I) of pp. 2-10 is pasted-down score. Dated 14 August 2001.

(12). Corrected printed proofs. Chester Music 2001, pp. [1]-39. Corrected by Wood in red ink, each page dated, 18-23 August 2001.
