- Title:
- Journal of the Reverend Arthur Copeman of a walking tour of Brittany, France
- Scope & Content:
- Handwritten journal of a walking tour in Brittany, France, belonging to the Reverend Canon Arthur Charles Copeman.
Journal begins on 15 Aug 1864, travelling from Ely station to London with Frederic M Metcalfe, probably the brother of his second wife. They travelled the next day to Southampton and took the steamer to le Havre.
Once in France, the pair travelled extensively over the next month, mostly exploring the towns and visiting their churches.
The main towns visited in the order they travelled were: Harfleur, Honfleur, Lisieux, Caen, Cherbourg (where they walked up the Montagne du Roule and visited the Arsenal), Carentan, Coutances, Avranches (including a visit to Mont Saint Michel), Dol, Pontorson, St Malo (where they bathed in the sea), Dinan, Guingamp (where they witnessed the Festival of Saint Loup), Morlaix, St Pol de Leon, Lasneven, Brest, Le Conquet, Port Launay, Quimper, Auray, Locmariaquer (boat trip to island Gavrinis), Vannes, Chartres, and Paris.
Copeman reached Paris on 15 Sep 1864, stayed for a day, and then took the train to Calais and a ferry to Dover.
This volume includes some press cuttings and a letter to Copeman from Miss Mary Parkes Perchard, who they met earlier on their trip, regarding a lost notebook.
