- Title:
- Diary of the Reverend Arthur Copeman
- Scope & Content:
- Handwritten diary of the Reverend Canon Arthur Charles Copeman, recording the events of his daily life, including a number of handwritten transcripts of letters he wrote or received.
The volume begins on 23 Jan 1856 when he was senior curate of the parish of St Peter's, Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
Copeman soon received an offer for a position as curate of Soham. He accepted the role in early Feb 1856 after a visit to the parish, to start in midsummer. In Apr 1856 Copeman attended the laying of the first stone of a new bridge over the river Nene.
In Jun 1856, as Copeman began preparing for his move to Soham, his wife, Mary, traveled to Warwick to her brother's bedside. By the time Copeman met her in Warwick, she and their young son, Arthur, were suffering from scarlet fever. Copeman records witnessing the death of Arthur on 27 Jun 1856.
Copeman settled well into his new role over the summer, but soon heard about a vacancy in St Andrews, Norwich. Votes were cast on 8 Jan 1857 and Copeman elected. It seems there were accusations that Copeman influenced the vote and this volume includes a number of letters, including several loose, relating to this issue.
The volume ends with a description of a speech given at a local society about missionary work in India and China.
This volume includes some cuttings pasted into the volume and a number of loose items. The loose items include:
- a press cutting announcing the wedding of Copeman's sister-in-law in Warwick on 29 May 1855
- an invitation to the presentation of a testimonial to Copeman at Wisbech town hall in Jun 1856
- a press cutting from the Wisbech news regarding the appointment of Copeman as minister of St Andrews, Norwich, in Jan 1857
- a handwritten summary of Copeman's career up to and including Jan 1857
- a copy of a typed memorandum from the Bishop of Norwich announcing his resignation due to ill health
