Scope & Content:

Settings for mezzo-soprano and string orchestra: 'Tom O'Bedlam's Song' (Anon.); 'Why East Wind Chills' (Dylan Thomas); and 'O Unicorn Among the Cedars' (W. H. Auden). The settings were first drafted in 1957, and were subsequently 'recast' between summer 2009 and spring 2010. This file comprises both the earlier drafts and the later revised score. The material is arranged beginning with the most recent score and drafts.

(1). Autograph full score in pencil (2009-10). Title-page and pp. 1-19 (6 nested bifolia: 300 x 420 mm). Dated: 20 September 2009 (p. 1); 15 February 2010 (p. 12); and 18 March 2010 (p. 19).

(2). 'Tom O'Bedlam's Song' (2009). Pencil drafts:

  • Complete draft. 5 folios (420 x 295 mm) numbered 1-5 by Wood, dated 3 August-16 September 2009;
  • Draft and sketch music. 6 folios (420 x 295 mm), the first folio dated 2 August 2009.
(3). 'Why East Wind Chills' (2009). Pencil drafts:
  • Complete draft. 5 folios (420 x 295 mm) numbered 1-5 by Wood (undated);
  • Draft and sketch music. 4 folios (420 x 295 mm). One folio is dated 6 September 2009.
(4). 'O Unicorn Among the Cedars' (2009-10). Pencil drafts:
  • Complete draft. 6 folios (420 x 295 mm) numbered 1-6 by Wood, dated November 2009-February 2010;
  • Draft and sketch music. 8 folios (420 x 295 mm), some dated, spanning October 2009-January 2010.

(5). Corrected printed proofs (Chester Music 2010), pp. [1]-33 (size: A4). Annotated on the first page 'Proofs for Hugh 15.04.10'. Corrected throughout by Wood in red ink.

(6). Further printed proofs (Chester Music, 2010) incorporating previous corrections (including the dedication: 'i.m. Nicholas Maw'). Occasional annotations in red ink.

(7). Continuous pencil draft of 'Tom O'Bedlam's Song' and 'Why East Wind Chills' [1957]. 3 bifolia (265 x 360 mm). Pages numbered 1-[12] by Wood.

(8). 'Tom O'Bedlam's Song' [1957]:

  • Pencil draft (2 bifolia: 265 x 360 mm). [1957];
  • Incomplete photocopy autograph score (for voice and piano). 2 folios (numbered pp. 2-3), probably of later date.
(9). 'Why East Wind Chills' (dated February 1957). Dyeline autograph score for mezzo-soprano and string orchestra, with some additional draft score annotated in pencil. Title page and pp. 1-7 (two nested bifolia and a single folio: 280 x 380 mm). On the verso of the title-page Wood has annotated (in black ink): 'This copy was sent to my mother for her birthday in 1957 and afterwards kept at Rose Cottage, Tabby's Nook, Newburgh [Lancashire] inside a copy of Thornton's Temple of Flora by my father until his death on 27 July 1966.'

(10). 'Why the East Wind Chills'. Pencil draft material [1957]. 2 bifolia (265 x 360 mm; and 280 x 420 mm).

(11). 'O Unicorn Among the Cedars'. Various pencil drafts and sketch material [1957] on paper of different sizes, comprising 5 bifolia and 2 ff.
