The file comprises settings of two poems by Edwin Muir: 'Merlin' and 'The Road'. The setting of 'Merlin' (for soprano and recorder) is complete and identified as Opus 59, no. ii. The setting of 'The Road' is an incomplete draft on three folios. There is no further information in the file about the individual elements of Opus 59.
'Merlin' was first performed in a concert to celebrate the life and work of Ian Kemp (1931-2011) at the Concert Hall, Manchester University, on 10 November 2012. Soprano: Lesley-Jane Rogers. Recorder: John Turner.
(1). 'Merlin'. Printed score, for soprano and recorder (1 bifolium: folded A3). The front title-page is annotated in pencil: 'op.59/ii'. The score, printed on the inner two pages, is dedicated: 'for Sian i.m. Ian Kemp'. Score date: 22 October 2012.
(2). 'Merlin'. Fair copy, scored in pencil on the outer pages of a bifolium (270 x 340 mm), finishing at the bottom of the second page but lacking the final two bars of the setting. Identified at the head of the score as 'op. 59/ii'.
(3). 'Merlin'. Draft score, in pencil. Four individually dated folios (420 x 295 mm) dated 14, 16, 18 and 22 October 2012.
(4). 'The Road'. Incomplete draft score, in pencil on three folios (420 x 295 mm) dated 8 and 13 October 2012. For voice and recorder. Muir's name is not indicated but his authorship is evident from the words.
