A string trio for violin, viola and cello. The title of the work is taken from a poem by Constantine Cavafy. Wood's programme note, included in the file, refers to the composition as 'a sort of mini symphonic poem'. It was commissioned by the Britten-Pears Foundation, the RVW Trust and the Swaledale Festival. First performed on 2nd June 2016 by the Florin Trio, at St. Andrew's Church, Grinton, as part of the 2016 Swaledale Festival.
The file comprises: a draft programme note together with Cavafy's 'Ithaka' and a second poem by Cavafy; first and second corrected printed proofs; an autograph score in pencil and a revised photocopy of the same score; and various pages of draft score.
(1). Draft programme note, in autograph and as two typed versions. Together with photocopies of two poems by Constantine Cavafy, 'Ithaka' and 'The God Abandons Antony'.
(2). 1st corrected proofs (Chester Music, 2016), pp. 1-12 (double-sided A4). Wood's corrections in red ink; other corrections in blue pencil.
(3). 2nd proofs (Chester Music, 2016), pp. 1-12 (single-sided A4). Unmarked save for '2nd proof' in red ink (p. 1), and a correction in pencil to bar 98 (viola).
(4). Autograph score in pencil. 4 nested bifolia (340 x 270 mm). Paginated as pp. 1-8 (bars 1-162), where the score breaks, to be followed by an unpaginated re-writing of p. 8 followed by concluding p. 9 (bars 151-186). Dated 20 February 2016 (p. 1) and 8 April 2016 (p. 9).
(5). Photocopy of the autograph score, corrected in red ink, pp. 1-9 (330 x 265 mm).
(6). Autograph draft music in pencil, comprising an outer bifolium (with title) enclosing 11 discrete bifolia scored on recto and verso (340 x 270 mm). Some bifolia are dated, and two in particular (13 October and 1-3 November 2014) include draft music relating to 'An Epithalamion' (Opus 60).
