These compositions were originally gathered together by Wood into two files, one of which was titled 'Light Music and Occasional Pieces'. The two files have been combined and the compositions arranged in chronological order. The fronts of the original files listing their contents have been retained (see item 12 below).
(1). 'Charleston for Joanna'. Photocopy autograph score for piano (1 folio: 420 x 295 mm). Not dated, but the original folder states 'c 1980?'
(2). Lengthily titled: 'Dedicated (without Her graciouf Permiffion) to EDIE, Counteff of PIRBRIGHT (Grand Mifftreff of HOVE, Mrs etc). Madam – pray accept from the Humble Pen of Yr Humble & Obdt. Servt. Thif Medley of Airef created by the Geniuf of Her Ladyfhip's favourite composer – the illustriouf & Rt. Revd. RICHARD RODNEY BENNETT, Commander of the British Empire etc – upon the Occafion of Hif Fiftieth Birthday – upon whom may the Yeares fit af lightly af they do upon Yr Ladyfhip herfelf'. A piano duet in photocopy autograph score, dated 29 March 1986 (1 bifolium: 360 x 280 mm).
(3). 'Waltz for Deborah' for cello and piano, dated 14 June 1993. Fair copy autograph score in pencil, on 2 bespoke bifolia (250 x 230 mm). The final six bars have been pasted down. Together with a photocopy of an autograph cello part (1 folio: size A4).
(4). 'Giraffe Song for Mimi's birthday' for voice and piano, dated 11 July 1994. 'Words & Music by Hugh Shoemaker-Levey & Marina Davidoff-Orloff'. Photocopy autograph score on a single bifolium (A3 folded).
(5). 'Frog Song'. Photocopy autograph score, pp. 1-15 (8 folios: 295 x 420 mm). For voice and piano. Annotated with additional score in red ink and pencil. Dated 3-19 August 1994 (p. 15). Beneath the title (p. 1) the composition is attributed: 'music by J. S. Bach / additional lyrics by G. F. Handel'. The words begin with 'I'm Mimi's frog' and the song is contemporaneous with 'Giraffe Song'.
(6). 'New Piece' (fragment), p. 2 only, scored in pencil on the first page of a bifoilium (295 x 420 mm). For voice and piano. Dated 18 September 1995. Lyric: 'my secret to sustain I'm finding quite a strain / If I make myself quite plain (though it goes against the grain) to explain myself again / Your footsteps I'll no longer dog / You're finding this a pain / Your interest starts to wane'. Across the inner pages of the same bifolium, also dated 18 September 1995, are 12 bars of unidentified autograph full score in pencil.
(7). 'The Brave Man'. A setting for SATB chorus of apoem by Wallace Stevens. 'For Giles Swayne on his 50th birthday'.Fair copy autograph score in pencil, pp. 1-3 (1 bifolium enclosing a singlefolio: 295 x 420 mm). Date: 30 September 1996 (p. 3).
(8). 'A Report Song in a Dream, Between a Shepherd andHis Nymph', for soprano and recorder. Words: Nicholas Breton. 'With warmestwishes to Sir John Manduell on the occasion of his 70th birthday'.First performance by Alison Wells (soprano) and John Turner (recorder) in theBarbirolli Room at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, 27 September 1998, in aconcert to celebrate Manduell's 70th birthday. Computer-printedscore (originally spiral-bound) comprising title-page and pp. 1-3 (3 folios xA4). Also, a fair copy autograph score in pencil (2 folios: 420 x 295 mm) dated29 May 1998; and 3 folios of draft score in pencil (420 x 295 mm) dated 15 and21 May 1998 (note: the upper right corner of one folio has been cut away withno apparent loss of score).
(9). 'Time Was Away'. A setting for voice and piano ofa poem by Louis MacNeice ('Meeting Point'):
- Complete pencil score across the inner pages of fourbespoke bifolia, numbered 1-4 by the composer, each bifolium dated from 11-22January 2000. 111 bars. Pasted-downscore on pp. 1 and 2.
- Incomplete draft score and sketch music across theinner pages of four bespoke bifolia, one bifolium dated 18 January 2000.
(10). 'Le Jardin' and 'Alicante'. Settings of twoshort poems (in French) from Parolesby Jacques Prévert. Photocopy autograph scores, for voice and piano, withoutdate [after 2000]. 2 folios (420 x 295 mm).
(11). 'Easter'. A setting for voice and piano of linesfrom 'Easter' by George Herbert. Autograph score in pencil on a single folio(420 x 295 mm) with the concluding bars on a small strip, dated 21 March 2008.Also, a photocopy autograph score ('for Susanna') on four small folios (190 x235 mm), also dated 21 March 2008.
(12). The file fronts of the two folders in which themusic in this file was originally housed, with the contents listed in Wood'shand. Not everything listed was found within the files: some items listed werefound elsewhere among Wood's scores (e,g. 'Comus Quadrilles', 'Eleanor's Piece'and '50 Chords for David Matthews') and now have their own place within this British Library sequence; 'An Ancient to Ancients', a setting of Thomas Hardy,was moved during cataloguing to join another Hardy setting ('Thoughts ofPhena') in MS Mus. 1893/2/75 (in line with Wood's annotation to the file front:'for Hardy Collection'). Two compositions listed have not been found anywhere inWood's papers: 'The Skalkottas' Saturday Night' and 'Lines to Ralph Hodgson Esq.'
